How does SmartPill Lite work?

SmartPill Lite works by preventing the release of an egg (ovulation) and affecting sperm movement in the womb to prevent its union with the egg. It also changes the lining of the womb and renders it unsuitable for pregnancy.

SmartPill Lite is a combination oral contraceptive that contains drospirenone, a synthetic progestogen, and ethinylestradiol, a synthetic estrogen. The contraceptive efficacy of this tablet is achieved through various mechanisms, including the suppression of ovulation, alterations in cervical secretion, and rendering the endometrium unsuitable for implantation. When taken as directed, SmartPill Lite prevents the development of egg cells, maintains thick cervical mucus as a barrier to sperm, and alters the endometrium to prevent implantation.

Apart from its contraceptive properties, estrogen/progestogen combinations like SmartPill Lite offer additional benefits. These include more regular menstrual cycles, reduced menstrual pain, and lighter menstrual flow. Drospirenone, one of the key components, has antimineralocorticoid action, assisting in estrogen-related salt retention. It also has a favorable lipid profile when combined with ethinylestradiol, contributing to the increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

Drospirenone's antiandrogenic properties do not interfere with the rise of ethinylestradiol-related sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), which is beneficial for binding and inactivating endogenous androgens. Importantly, drospirenone mimics the biochemical and pharmacological profile of the natural hormone progesterone, lacking androgenic, estrogenic, glucocorticoid, or anti glucocorticoid actions.

Dosage & Administration of SmartPill Lite

• There are 21 tablets in a pack labeled with the days of the week.
• Take one tablet daily at approximately the same time, with water if needed.

• After finishing the 21 tablets, take no tablets for the next 7 days (withdrawal phase).
• Menstruation should typically occur during this 7-day break.
• Begin the next pack on the eighth day, even if menstruation persists.
• Always start a new pack on the same day of the week.

Starting the First Pack:

• Begin the first pack on the first day of your menstrual cycle.
• Take the tablet labeled with that week's date. For example, if menstruation begins on a Sunday, take the tablet labeled Sunday.
• Alternatively, start on days 2-5 of your cycle, but use an additional contraceptive method for the first 7 days.

Switching from Another Pill:

• Switch the day after finishing the final tablet in the current pill pack.
• If the current pack includes inactive tablets, start the day after taking the first active tablet.
• Begin no later than the day following the current pill's tablet-free break.

Switching from Progestogen-Only Pill, Injectable, or Implant:

• Follow specific instructions provided based on the type of contraceptive used before.

After Pregnancy, Miscarriage, or Abortion:

• Follow your doctor's advice, and it may be recommended to wait until after the first regular period before starting the pill.

Overdose:
